When a Scarborough business can’t work out why the phone has gone quiet, the cause is rarely exotic. The same small SEO mistakes turn up again and again on Google listings and websites across the borough, and most of them take an afternoon to put right once someone spots them. So we’ve sorted the ten we come across most into the three places they hide: the map listing, the website, and the routine that is supposed to keep both current.

SEO mistakes on the Google listing

1. Assuming verification went through

Your dashboard may show a complete, tidy profile that no customer can find. Whichever verification route Google offered, phone, video or postcard, it has to be finished, and many owners believe theirs was when it wasn’t. If your listing has never appeared for your own name, check this before anything else.

2. Writing the unit number three different ways

Many Scarborough plazas put a dozen or more tenants behind a single street number. Spell the suite “Unit 4” on your profile, “#4” on one directory and leave it off another, and Google can blend your listing with a neighbour’s or with whoever rented the space before you. The fix: choose one format and use it everywhere.

3. Padding the name, one of the SEO mistakes that risks suspension

A name like “Top Rated Dentist Town Centre Open Late” may lift a listing for a while. However, it is also among the most frequent reasons for a suspension, and when a listing goes, its reviews go with it. Google’s guidelines for representing your business ask for the name you use in the real world. In other words, keep the name exactly as it appears on your shopfront. Owners searching “google business profile suspended for no reason” can often trace it to this or to a virtual-office address.

4. Hours that don’t match the door

Someone typing “walk in clinic scarborough open now” sees results filtered by the hours on each profile. Wrong hours drop you out of that search completely. Likewise, holiday closures left unposted send people to a locked door, which tends to produce exactly the review you don’t want.

SEO mistakes on the website

5. One page for every service

Google ranks individual pages, not whole sites. As a result, a single “Services” page listing drain cleaning, water heaters, sump pumps and backwater valves gives none of them a real chance. Ten services deserve ten focused pages, each aimed at one search.

6. Leaving Toronto out of the address

Scarborough is part of Toronto, and many residents add “Ontario” or “Toronto” when they search. A site that says only “Scarborough” gives Google and customers less to go on. For that reason, put “Scarborough, Ontario” or “Toronto” in your titles, footer address and structured data.

7. Neighbourhood pages with only the name swapped

Locals search by their corner: Agincourt, West Hill, Guildwood, Kennedy Road, Golf Club and Lawrence. Writing a page for each area you serve is sensible. Copying one page and changing “Agincourt” to “Malvern” is not, because Google treats those as doorway pages and ignores them. Instead, a good area page mentions the streets you cover, the jobs you do there and how soon you can arrive.

8. A site that crawls on a phone

Your visitor is often in a plaza parking lot on mobile data, not at a desk on office wifi. Photos uploaded straight from a camera, a heavy page builder and a pile of forgotten chat and tracking scripts are the usual culprits. Anyone who has asked “why is my website so slow to load” should therefore begin with the images.

SEO mistakes in the routine

9. Collecting reviews in bursts, then going quiet

Google may filter a sudden batch of reviews after one big push as suspicious. Meanwhile, a year of silence afterwards makes the profile look stale to customers. Ask every satisfied customer, steadily, perhaps with a QR code at the counter. Then answer each review, critical ones included, calmly and in public.

10. Never testing the contact form

This is the failure owners hear about last. A plugin update or a mail setting changes, the form still says “thank you”, and the messages never arrive. Searches such as “contact form not sending email wordpress” tend to come after weeks of missed inquiries. To avoid that, send yourself a test message every month.

A quick self-audit for SEO mistakes

  1. Look yourself up on a mobile. Does the listing appear, pinned to your actual door?
  2. Check that profile, site and two directories show an identical address and unit.
  3. Read your business name on Google aloud. Does it match your sign?
  4. Check your hours, including any holiday closures coming up.
  5. Count your service pages against the services you sell.
  6. Look for “Ontario” or “Toronto” in your home page title.
  7. Send a test message through your own form.
