Categories
The primary category is the strongest single setting on the profile. We choose it by looking at which categories the businesses already in your 3-pack use, then add the secondary ones that apply.
A customer searches, sees a map with three businesses, reads a star rating and taps “call”, so your website was never opened. For a local business, that listing is the front door.
It is also the one asset you do not control. For instance, anyone can suggest an edit to it. Google can merge it with a duplicate, hide it or suspend it without warning, and there is no phone number to ring. That is why good Google Maps SEO starts with a profile set up correctly and then watched.
Search demand
This is Canadian suggestion data, and most of it reads like an emergency, because for the owner it is one.
Six of those nine searches are about a profile that has stopped showing. That is the reality of Google Maps SEO for a small business: the first job is often getting a listing back, and only then improving it. So the section below starts with diagnosis.
Check these first
These are listed roughly from most to least common, so rule them out in order before changing anything else.
A profile can exist in your account and still be hidden from the public. Video, phone or postcard verification has to be completed, and many owners believe it was when it was not.
The usual causes are extra keywords in the business name, an address at a virtual office or shared mailbox, or several major edits made at once. After that, reinstatement means an appeal with evidence, such as a business licence, a utility bill and photos of the signage.
Scarborough is full of plazas where a dozen businesses share one street address. Unless the unit number is written the same way everywhere, Google can blend your listing with a neighbour’s or with the previous tenant’s.
A duplicate listing, often created by a former employee or left over from an old address, splits your reviews and confuses Google. Consequently, the duplicate needs to be merged or removed.
Search from your own shop and you will see yourself, while a customer four kilometres away sees someone else. That is distance at work, and the answer is stronger relevance and prominence.
The work
The primary category is the strongest single setting on the profile. We choose it by looking at which categories the businesses already in your 3-pack use, then add the secondary ones that apply.
Every service listed individually with a short description, every relevant attribute ticked, and the languages your staff speak added. In Scarborough that last one especially matters.
Unit numbers standardised, the pin placed on your actual door, and for trades the service area set to the neighbourhoods you really cover.
Real photos of the premises, the team and the work, added on a schedule, because a profile that looks active gets more taps than one with a single stock image from 2021.
A short link or QR code, a simple script for when to ask, and replies to every review. Steady, recent reviews count for more than a large old total.
User-suggested edits, new duplicates and sudden drops are caught early, before two weeks of calls go missing.
Done carefully
These are the limits we work inside by default, whether or not anyone asks.
Almost every shortcut that lifts a Google profile quickly is also a reason Google gives for suspending one.
Keyword-stuffed names, fake addresses and bought reviews do produce results for a while. Then the listing is suspended, and the reviews and ranking you built go with it. That is why we only use methods that follow Google’s guidelines for representing your business, which stay safe the day Google looks closely.

How we work
Four steps, in order. You always know which one we are on and what it is for.
We check your site, your Google Business Profile and where you rank from several points across Scarborough, then show you the gaps.
We choose the searches worth winning in your neighbourhoods and assign each one to a single page, so no two pages compete.
Profile work, technical fixes, content and citations, done in order of impact so the biggest gains land first.
A monthly report on rankings, traffic, calls and forms, with next month’s plan written in plain English.
Questions
In most cases, yes, if the business is real and at the address shown. First we work out the likely cause, then we fix it and file the appeal with supporting documents. Google’s review takes anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, and nobody can speed that part up.
Yes, as a service-area business with the address hidden. However, showing a home address you do not serve customers at is against the guidelines and a common cause of suspension.
There is no fixed number. Instead, look at the three businesses in your local pack and aim to match their count over time while staying more recent. After all, five reviews this month beat fifty from three years ago.
Only if it breaks Google’s policies, for example spam or a review of the wrong business. Otherwise the best response is a calm public reply and more recent good reviews around it.
It is the largest part of it. The profile decides whether you appear on the map, while your website supports it by confirming what you do and where.
A small one to ranking and a larger one to whether people tap. For example, offers, hours changes and recent work give a searcher a reason to choose you over the listing beside yours.
